I tried experimenting with picture cabochons… In retrospect, I see how I could have made this one more cohesive. I kinda thought this style would go quicker but in the end it takes as much time as the others.
Trimming and beading the border.
Also, the patterns without the extra beads over them are pretty. But I can't help myself, I have to add stuff >.> But I do like the more traditional bead embroidery feel of the under layer. Maybe I should do more of this too.

You've heard of Jars of Eyeballs, now get ready for:
Vials of Eyelashes
#should i tag this dollblr. would that make people less confused about the eyelash vial. or the eyeball jar#dollblr#actually i dont keep my eyes in jars i have em in awkward little baggies#the homemade glass cabochon ones in one and the professionally made acrylic and glass ones in another#my eyeball baggies. is that better or worse than the eyeball jar#im reorganizing all my stuff so like craft supplies and eletronic cables and whatever#and i had some package of really cheap ass fake eyelashes that i thought about using in a faceup#(never actually got around to using em LOL someday i'll try out eyelashes on faceups but rn ive been much more on the like)#(cartoony and simplified end of doll face painting so i havent felt much need for em)#(especially because im partial to anime style dolls)#and the packaging was really bulky to yknow keep the eyelashes pristine. but these were REALLY really cheap lashes so they were just like#by default slightly wonky. which doesnt matter too much to me because they would only be used for dolls or art anyway so they dont need to#like. keep the perfect human eye shape LOL so i was trying to figure out how to store em without taking up too much space#and i remembered all my vials for fountain pen ink and well. the rest is history. the rest is the eyelash vial#now time to put this deep in a drawer unlabeled to forget about and then give myself a jumpscare about mysterious vial years later

Cumdach of the Stowe Missal (Ireland, 1025-1052) Wood, brass, silver gilt, glass cabochons;
The Department of Medieval Art and The Cloisters has in its collection a curious early 20th-century reproduction of the 11th-century Cumdach of the Stowe Missal. A cumdach, or book shrine, is an Irish form of reliquary case made for books associated with important religious figures. Only five early examples of cumdachs exist.

Tumbling Fused Glass Cabochons for Fire Polishing, Project Tutorial
Fused glass cabochons can get a scummy bottom from the fiber paper or shelf primer, and devitrification on the top. To clean these up, you can use sandpaper or diamond pads, but an easy way is to tumble them with silicone carbide grit.

The Hat Man Cometh....
Whew! A while ago I resolved to do a main OC costume bingo (ive already done it in doll form 🤨) and after Pupet and Sulu, it was finally Rem's turn.
About this costume, the primary fabrics are velvet, satin, and dupioni from fabric wholesale direct. The eyes are either repainted googly eyes or glass cabochons. also dont hate me but i did edit my eyes bc you couldnt pay me to mess around with full sclera contacts.
About the OC, Rem belongs to a story about a dreaming kingdom and nightmare realm, where the dream kingdom is trying to lull people into permanent sleep. Rem works to counteract that force as the last nightmare acolyte, serving the nightmare lord Raken. he is in a very real sense: The Hat Man. Giving people nightmares is a messy job, and Rem is even messier mentally, but I enjoy writing him because of it. He also only dresses like this 15% of the time in cerimonial nightmare garb, he usually rocks a literal T-shirt and jeans.

Some Gemology Vocabulary
for your next poem/story (pt. 1)
Gemology—the scientific study of gemstones
Acicular - crystals that have a "needle-like" form
Adamantine - the highest classification of surface lustre or reflectivity which may be shown by a gemstone (e.g. in faceted diamond)
Adularescence - a billowing flow of whitish or bluish colors that seem to float along the surface
Allochromatic - a gemstone is allochromatic when it is colorless in its pure state
Aventurescence - specular reflections or spangles of light reflected from plate-like inclusions as a stone is rotated
Baroque - gem materials having an irregular shape e.g. baroque pearls
Botryoidal - interlocking, rounded masses that sometimes look like grapes or bubbles resulting from radiating masses of fibrous crystals
Carat - a unit of weight for gemstones. There are five metric carats to the gram.
Chatoyancy - the cat’s-eye-like phenomenon caused by light reflecting from tiny fiber-like inclusions within a gem. The "eye" is seen at right angles to the direction of the inclusions. Stones must be cut en cabochon to see this effect.
Fluorescence - the emission of visible light by a gemstone when exposed to a light source whose light we normally cannot see
Idiochromatic - a gemstone is idiochromatic when the element causing its color is an essential part its chemical composition. For example, iron, which is an intrinsic part of the chemical makeup of peridot, is the cause of its green color.
Lapidary - the art of working with stone and gems which includes engraving, cutting, and polishing
Opalescence - a reflection of a milky or pearly light from a gem's interior, sometimes used as a synonym for iridescence.
Orange peel - a surface appearance resembling the outer skin of an orange. This is sometimes seen in plastic and glass simulants and should be observed in reflected light.
Phantom crystal - also known as "ghost crystal", they occur in quartz when there is an interruption in the growth cycle. It appears like a faint crystal within a crystal.

Czech Foil Glass Assemblage Necklace 1930s
“Czech foil glass handmade beads from a 1930s necklace add glow as well as opalescent pink beads from the 20s to 30s, the central pendant is a vintage Czech ‘blister’ glass foil backed cabochon that I’ve mounted on a vintage dapped French gothic finding. Supporting charm pendants are a West German glass prong set Madonna and an old French souvenir brooch of Lourdes”

Me to myself: trust the process. New beaded project. This fimo face has cracks and I like it, but I reinforced it by filling the cracks with UV resin. At first I thought I was going to use nailart little snakes, but I ended up not liking them that much so I made my own… they ended up more bendy than I expected after baking. Rubbery like, but fine anyway. ^^ I colored them and sealed everything under a few coats of mat varnish. And then I set to work. Trust the process… Why is it so orange ?? Trust the process xD
So. Orange. xD Applying backing, then trimming…
Border and finishing touches.
Lil' Orange Medusa. ("Why did you put a small effort on the underlying beads if you can't even see them ??" … TRUST THE PROCESS, OKAY ??)

The current state of the Rock Wall!
Video transcript:
Who wants a tour of my rock collection?
I guess we’ll start over here; this is the newest shelf. I just added it. A lot of stuff from the other shelves have now joined this shelf. It’s got a nice little sliding glass door to protect my more high-end specimens. On this we have a lot of my thumbnails, including some of the more delicate, or some of the more valuable thumbnails. Some of my more high-end specimens over here, like that beautiful wulfenite.
I have started labeling the stones now, so some of the stones have these neat little labels, and some of them do not. But everything in this case does.
And then of course some of the larger high-end specimens down here. And I’m not sure what I’m gonna put on those lower shelves yet.
Up above that I have a new display case, and this is where I’m putting all of my cabochons.
So here I’ve gotten it down and we’ll open it up. This is all velcro. I made this myself out of a normal shadowbox that I got at the store. These are all attached by velcro so that I can take them out and rearrange them and add more to them and move them around.
This case is lighted. The case next to it is technically lighted, but the lights are out of battery right now. Eventually I want to switch that to something more permanent that can be plugged in all the time so I don’t have to constantly swap out the batteries.
This is the Original Rock Shelf, so it is crammed full of some of my oldest specimens. I recently did a project where I added these acrylic risers to it to kinda make a little bit of space, which made it a bit less crammed, which is nice. A lot of specimens on this shelf. Buch of geodes down there. That’s Geode Territory.
Next to it, below the North American giant ground sloth bone, we have more of my thumbnail specimens. Just a bunch of little guys. I’d like to light this shelf too. I think that would help them show up better. The meteorite collection is over here. We got some rust on this guy, but I think he’s doing okay. And then over here, my opal collection. So here is the Ethiopian opals, we’ve got an Australian opal, we’ve got a Honduran opal back there. That one up there is also Ethiopian opal, right in the middle.
Down below that, just more of the really tiny stuff, and some miscellaneous stuff.
The spheres and eggs are under that. The one under a cloth is a reconstituted quartz. If I leave it where sunlight can hit it, it’ll burn my house down so I just keep it covered because I’m a little bit paranoid about that.
Miscellaneous stuff: I got some tumbled stones, I got some palm stones. Just… stuff gets thrown down on that shelf.
The shelf next to it. This was at one point my large specimen and high-end shelf, and at this point is just the large specimen shelf because the high-end shelf is now over here. Which has made this shelf a lot less crowded, to move all that stuff over. Again, I’ve got my acrylic risers on there. I have a bunch of my big specimens. I’d like to light this shelf too. You can see how the shadows are kind of a problem like on the halite in the back there.
And then below those are the agates. This shelf is the bane of my existence. I have so many agates that I physically cannot cram any more agates onto this shelf. I’m gonna need to get some more risers and see if I can clear a little bit of space for the agate collection.
Down below that, some more miscellaneous large things. Got a jade, got a labradorite, got a kambaba stone. In the box is vivianite, but it can’t be exposed to light, so it lives in a box. And then here I have another one of these shadowboxes that opens up, and it’s got a bunch of gem jars inside of my very very small stuff.
And then over here, this is the shelf where my newest stuff starts living. Stuff that I’ve added to my collection most recently. This is also where all the fossils are living currently. And in that box is all the crinoids I just pick up off the ground. We have a ton of them around here.
Underneath that we’ve got this big desert rose, fills the whole shelf.
Next to that I have this tiny shelf that has some of my rock-adjacent things like my mineralogy puzzles. Tully lives here. Some of my mineralogy books but not all of them. They don’t all fit.
And that’s the short and sweet tour of the current state of my rock collection!

Cabochon finger ring
This stunning finger ring is decorated with dark glass paste, rather than a semi-precious stone. The simplicity of the ring indicates that it is Carolingian rather than Merovingian. The Carolingians embraced Catholicism on a much broader scale with the top-down process of baptism/religious conversion having reached the middle and even some of the lower classes.
This results in more minimalistic dress. Jewelry becomes very minimal and brooches that were included into ones appearance were once again reduced to their functional level. A finger ring like this does not proof that the wearer was in fact no longer pagan, but it does show that the wearer followed the fashion of the (Catholic) elite. Wearing finger rings also indicates that the wearer performed little to no physical labour as it risks damaging the jewel and it is also a means to show your wellbeing to the world.
